Pain is not random. It's communication.
For years, I watched people silence their pain with whatever was fastest , numbing creams, anti-inflammatories, temporary fixes that worked just long enough to get through the day. But nothing was actually resolving what the body was trying to say.
Because pain is almost always rooted in something deeper:
Inflammation. Poor circulation. Tissue damage. Joint degradation.
A nervous system that has been pushed past its threshold for too long.
I see this most clearly in my clients managing arthritis and osteoarthritis , people who have been handed a prescription and told to manage their symptoms indefinitely, with no real conversation about addressing what's driving them.
There is another way.
So instead of asking how do we stop the pain,
I started asking a completely different question:
How do we support the body so
that pain is no longer needed as a signal?
This oil was created from that place. Not as a numbing agent. Not as a Band-Aid. As functional plant medicine that supports true healing at the tissue level, it has become one of the most consistently used formulas among my arthritis and osteoarthritis clients.
I'm going to show you exactly how to make it.
Why Most Pain Relief Doesn't Actually Work
Conventional pain relief — most creams, patches, NSAIDs, and over-the-counter options — is designed to interrupt the pain signal. That's it. They don't touch the inflammatory pathways driving the problem. They don't improve blood flow to deteriorating joint tissue. They don't support nerve repair, cartilage health, or cellular regeneration.
So the pain comes back. Often worse. And for those managing arthritis or osteoarthritis long-term, the cumulative effects of chronic NSAID use come with their own set of serious concerns — gut lining damage, cardiovascular strain, and kidney stress among them.
Real, lasting relief happens when you address the root:
— Reduce the inflammation generating the signal
— Increase circulation to bring healing nutrients to damaged and degraded tissue
— Support the body's natural regenerative processes
— Calm a nervous system locked in a chronic pain-response cycle
This formula does all four — simultaneously, and synergistically.
The Biochemistry Behind This Formula
Every herb in this oil was chosen because it targets a distinct layer of pain. For arthritis and osteoarthritis specifically, the combination of anti-inflammatory, circulatory, and tissue-repair botanicals makes this formula particularly powerful.
Inflammation Modulation (Root Cause) Turmeric and ginger are among the most well-researched anti-inflammatory botanicals in existence. Curcuminoids and gingerols inhibit COX-2 enzymes and reduce cytokine signaling — the same pathways targeted by many pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories, without the systemic side effects. For chronic joint inflammation, arthritis flares, and osteoarthritis-related swelling, these two are absolutely foundational.
Circulation & Pain Signal Interruption Cayenne — specifically its active compound capsaicin — increases local blood flow and interacts with TRPV1 receptors to disrupt the pain signaling cycle. This is what creates that warming, deeply relieving sensation. Improved circulation is also critical for joint health: cartilage has no direct blood supply and depends entirely on the surrounding synovial fluid and tissue circulation to receive nutrients and remove waste.
Tissue Repair & Regeneration Comfrey has been used for centuries under the name "knitbone" — and for good reason. Its active compound allantoin directly supports cell proliferation and tissue repair. For injuries, sprains, and the structural wear of osteoarthritis, comfrey works at a level most herbs simply cannot.
Nerve Pain Support St. John's Wort is one of the most clinically supported botanicals for nerve-related pain — the burning, tingling, and shooting sensations that are common in both advanced arthritis and nerve compression. It calms irritated nerve pathways and reduces neuroinflammation over time.
Anti-Inflammatory Calm Lavender, frankincense, and rosemary complete the formula — reducing inflammation, relaxing muscle tension that builds around painful joints, supporting circulation, and regulating the nervous system's response to chronic pain. Frankincense in particular has been studied for its effects on cartilage degradation and joint inflammation, making it especially relevant for osteoarthritis.
Bruising & Trauma Recovery Arnica is the gold standard botanical for acute trauma — swelling, bruising, and injury-related pain. It improves local blood flow and accelerates the clearance of inflammatory buildup in damaged tissue.
This is what a multi-pathway formula looks like. Not one action, one pathway, one herb — but a full system working together.
DIY Pain Relief Healing Oil
Base Oil — 1 cup olive oil (deeply penetrating, intrinsically anti-inflammatory) — Optional: add 2 tbsp castor oil for enhanced deep-tissue penetration
Dried Herbs — 2 tbsp comfrey leaf — 1 tbsp arnica — 1 tbsp St. John's Wort — 1 tbsp dried ginger — 1 tbsp turmeric — 1 tbsp rosemary — 1 tsp cayenne (start with less if you have sensitive skin)
Essential Oils (added after infusion, never during) — 10 drops lavender — 10 drops frankincense
How to Make It
Method 1: Slow Infusion (Most Potent)
Add all dried herbs to a clean, completely dry glass jar. Pour your oil over the herbs until they are fully submerged. Seal tightly and place in a warm spot — a sunny windowsill is ideal. Let infuse for 2–4 weeks, gently shaking every couple of days.
When ready, strain through cheesecloth, add your essential oils, and transfer to a dark glass bottle for storage.
The slow infusion method draws the deepest level of medicinal compounds from the herbs. For chronic conditions like arthritis and osteoarthritis, this level of potency matters. The wait is worth it.
Method 2: Double Boiler (Same-Day Option)
Place herbs and oil together in a heat-safe glass jar. Set the jar inside a pot of water on the stove. Heat on the lowest possible setting for 2–3 hours — do not let it come to a boil. Allow to cool completely before straining and bottling.
This method is effective when you need the oil sooner. Keep the heat low and slow to preserve the integrity of the plant compounds.
How to Use It
Apply directly to the area of pain 1–3 times daily. Massage in with firm, circular strokes for 3–5 minutes to stimulate circulation and encourage absorption into the tissue.
For arthritis and osteoarthritis specifically — apply to affected joints and follow immediately with a warm compress or heating pad. Heat opens the tissue, increases synovial circulation, and dramatically enhances absorption of the active compounds into the joint space. This combination is where my clients report the most significant relief.
For acute flares, use consistently throughout the day alongside rest. For chronic, long-term joint conditions, daily use over several weeks is where the cumulative shift happens — less stiffness in the morning, greater range of motion, and noticeably reduced baseline inflammation.
What This Oil Supports
— Arthritis and osteoarthritis — joint stiffness, inflammation, and degradation — Chronic joint pain that hasn't responded well to conventional options — Muscle soreness, tightness, and spasm — Back, neck, and shoulder pain — Nerve pain — burning, tingling, and shooting sensations — Sprains, strains, and inflammation from injury — Bruising and post-trauma swelling
What to Expect
Immediately: A warming sensation, muscle and joint relaxation, and noticeable short-term relief as circulation increases and the nervous system begins to downregulate.
With consistent use: Reduced baseline inflammation. Improved mobility and range of motion. Less frequent and less intense flare-ups. Faster recovery from physical strain. For my arthritis and osteoarthritis clients, consistent daily use is what creates the most meaningful, lasting change — this is not a one-time treatment, it is a daily practice of supporting your body's ability to repair itself.
What My Clients Say
This formula has become a cornerstone of the natural healing protocols I build for clients managing arthritis and osteoarthritis — particularly those who want to reduce their dependence on NSAIDs and prescription pain management without feeling like they're giving up relief.
The feedback I hear most consistently: less morning stiffness, more mobility, and a sense of finally doing something that is working with their body rather than just suppressing its signals.
That is exactly what plant medicine is designed to do.
A Note From Me
You can make this yourself — and I deeply believe you should understand what you're putting on your body. That knowledge is yours to have.
What I will also tell you honestly: potency is not just about having the right ingredient list. It comes from the quality of the herbs you source, the precision of the ratios, and the care behind the infusion process. Those things matter biochemically, not just philosophically. For something you're relying on to manage chronic pain, that level of integrity in the formula matters.
If you want to connect to the process and make this with your own hands, this guide is your foundation.
If you want a fully formulated, clinical-grade version made with wild-harvested herbs from regenerative sources — that's what my apothecary is here for.
Both are powerful paths. I'll meet you on either one.
Remember
Pain is not your enemy.
It is your body asking — sometimes screaming — for support.
For those living with arthritis and osteoarthritis, that signal has often been present for years, managed but never truly addressed. Plant medicine cannot reverse structural degeneration overnight. But it can meaningfully reduce the inflammation driving it, support the tissue surrounding it, and restore a level of daily function and comfort that many of my clients had stopped believing was possible.
When you give the body the right tools — circulation, nourishment, targeted anti-inflammatory medicine, and true tissue support — the signal no longer needs to be as loud.
That is where real relief begins.
